History of the Hani

It is thought that the Hani are progeny of the Qiang, that 2500 years ago were inhabiting the grounds placed to the South-west of the ancient Chinese, and that they emigrated on the South long ago.

About the IIIrd century there is mentioned in the Chinese chronicles a people called Heyi, who lives in the region of the river Dadu, which is thought be able to be the ancestors of the Hani, who in those times would be closely related to the Yi. In fact his languages and cultures still present numerous resemblances.

During the period of the Kingdom of Nanzhao the forefather of the Hani they were living in the center of Yunnan, emigrating towards the south border of the same one after the fall of this diet. It is possible that from the dismantling of the diet of Nanzhao up to the conquest of Yunnan for the Mongols, the Hani were forming a unified and independent political body. A kingdom that would spread over the region sudoriental of the current Yunnan province.

Submitted to the Chinese power from the times of the dynasty Yuan established by the Mongols. His population disperses in the local mountains that they inhabit, being governed by means of the system of the tusis by his local chiefs.

From the middle of the XIXth century, the increase of the conflicts in the Yunnan province provoked a flight on the south. It is the moment in which the populations Hani come to the countries of the Asian Southeast.
