The Lahu are one of the most interesting peoples of the Asian Southeast, since they still preserve in his cultural, social and religious life, numerous remains of the sexual equality that has had to of being common between them up to very recent epochs. The Lahu inhabit the southern part of the province of Yunnan and the north part of the neighboring countries. There are several theories on the origin of his name, the majority they allude to his relation with the tigers, although some show them how "those that they adore to the tiger", others "those that they roast to the tiger" and others "those that they hunt to the tiger". It is considered that four Lahu branches exist: Lahu na, Lahu shi, Lahu nyi and Lahu shehleh. All of them support an amazing cultural homogeneity in spite of being dispersed for a wide territory. His current population distributes between five countries of the following form: Inside China the regions where the Lahu concentrate are: His language belongs to the family tibeto-birmana, branch yi. Officially it is considered that there exist several dialects, the Lahuna, and the Lahuxi they are the most important, most intelligible between themselves. There are others spoken by a minor number of Lahu. Officially the Kucong are considered to be a branch of the Lahu. A fact with scarce scientific consistency, which owes more to the interest of the Chinese government not to recognize to too many minorities. The culture, mythology, history, language and form of life of the Kucong is different from that of the Lahuxi, which live close to them. Also, genetic tests have demonstrated that the Kucong are not related with the Lahu, but with the peoples Miao. |
