Presenting the Miao

The Miaos call the this way same of very different forms. Between them:

Hmu in the west of Guizhou.

Hmong, Muo or Mao in the area of Guizhou, Sichuan and Yunnan.

Guoxiong in the West of Hunan.

Ahmao in the Yunnan northeast.

These four peoples, for most of the authors, completely different, not only in language, but in each of the aspects of his culture, are officially four principal branches of the Miao. That on the other hand after almost half a century sharing this denomination, begins having a sense between some of his elites.

In addition to these, there is another good number of peoples that are named of different forms, cultural or linguistically related to the previous ones, which are asimismos considered Miao.

A people of long history and extended by an enormous territory, gets for his part a good number of names for the different local populations who live close to them, the most important are:

Flowery Miaos (in Qiannan).

Black Miaos (in Qiandongnan).

Green Miao (in Zhenning).

White Miaos (in Guizhou)

Red Miaos

Miaos of Long Skirt

Miao of Short Skirt

Miao of Eight Villages

Miao of the Mountains.

Population:

7.500.000 in China, and a good number in other countries of the Asian Southeast. The United States and France also are provided with important colonies.

Location:

More than half of them lives in the Province of Guizhou, 20 % in Hunan and in Yunnan, and minor quantities in Guangxi, Hubei and the island of Hainan. In general mountainous area where they have been moving back before the pressure they have.

Language: Branch Miao of the group Miao-Yao of the family Han tibetana.

With 3 principal dialects: Oriental (in West of Hunan), Head office (in the west of Guizhou) and Western (in Sichuan and Yunnan). With a certain resemblance between them.
