History of the Pumi

20030421

The Pumi descend from the ancient peoples Qiang who were living in the region where there are the current provinces of Shaanxi, Gansu and Sichuan. It is thought that his ancestors were taking nomadic lives in the South area of Gansu and this one of Qinghai, possibly being part of the called Kingdom of Bailang.

The Pumis inicaron his migrations on the south more than 2.200 years ago, after the victories of the first emperor Qinshihuang on the peoples Qiang.

The VIIth century ago they were established in the low grounds of the north of the Prefecture of Liangshan, in the outskirts of Yuexi and Xichang. Where from they continued a slow migration towards the south.

Since according to the Chinese chronicles, in the year 1253, when the army of Kublai Khan threw himself to the Yunnan invasion, the Pumi were living in the Sichuan south. Some of the tribes Pumi supported the Mongols, setting off with them to the Yunnan conquest. As reward there was a good number of Pumis that received the government of different districts and cities.

The identity of the Pumi in Yunnan has remained a masked woman often because, on having come from the hand of the Mongols, and having occupied responsible posts under his patronage, in many places they were known like "Mongols".
