History of the Tujia

Little is known about the history of the Tujia. The ignorance on them stems, especially, from the fact that for centuries they have happened confused with the rural populations of the outskirts. In fact, in spite of being a very numerous people, he was one of the last ones in being identified during the official process of recognition of the national minorities of China.

The historians think that the Tujia can be the original inhabitants of the region who live at present. His long permanence in the above mentioned grounds is difficult to know when and dedonde they came to the same ones. Although many hypotheses have risked, but until now none has been proved like true.

Some authors think that the Tujia are progeny of Ba de Sichuan, a people of high culture who lived in this province more than 2.000 years ago. Little historical information that are had on the Ba, shows, numerous cultural similarities de facto.

Others believe that his ancestors are the Wuman, ancestors also of the Yi, and reinforce his theories for the linguistic similarities, but since it is not also known to true science from which the Yi come, the problem continues in the air.

There are still other students who affirm that he is the progeny of the native peoples of Hunan, which have received influences of the nearby peoples.
